    3. "Once upon a time, something happened. If it hadn't happened, it wouldn't be told."This is the typical (lovely) opening to these stories. Though full of some craziness all their own, there's an Eastern twist to the tales that remind me of the Russian, and, indeed, some are clearly versions of the other - the Romanian "The Wonderful Bird" is related to the Russian "Firebird", only the Prince in "Wonderful Bird" is far better at taking advice than the one in "Firebird".More than the usual number o [...]

    4. I love reading fairy tales, folklore, and legends from various European countries, so this was one of many non-British collections I downloaded. (Plus it was a free Kindle book, so you can rarely go wrong there!)Overall, this is a modest-sized collection that I sense will appeal to fairy tale and fantasy lit enthusiasts (such as myself) more so just the average reader. While this doesn't rank as one of my favorite, go-to collections, it is interesting to compare and contrast these tales with oth [...]

    6. Not genericWhile many of these stories were collected by Andrew Lang, here there is the meat to Lang's Bones. It is well worth reading, if only because it encourages you to learn more.

    7. Entertaining. To one familiar almost exclusively with the Grimm brothers, the stories are strange and new, with a hint of the familiar. The writing itself is also enjoyable favorite quote: "Once upon a time, something happened. If it hadn't happened, it wouldn't be told."
