    1. This is my first stab at reading Balzac and if his early 19th century writings are a tad passive, chunky, and absent, they at least are all punctuated by a sturdy dramatic reveal. The only thing I can think to compare this to (being a genre reader and not a generally a reader of “literature”) would be good old O. Henry.     2. Given the length of the stories I am surprised by how drawn into them I got. I can only recommend Balzac's writing.

    3. I'm not a fan of the edition I had of this book since it gave no background information or footnotes, which adds so much to the reading of classic literature. As a result, I don't remember much from it, so the stars are more of a reflection of the edition rather the writing.
