    1. In Dust Devils, Jonathan takes us on a wild and horrific ride. He also reawakens my interest in vampires & westerns.I find that in his books, I prefer not to guess what happens next, but best to sit back, read and enjoy the story as it unfolds. There was non-stop action and lots of blood and gore, but also some laughs and tears. As in his other books, the plot was intense & engrossing, and the characters provided some insights on human nature and family dynamics. Dust Devils made me scare [...]

    2. Another good one from Mr. Janz. This one was a weird western, or western horror, and this is one of my favorite genres and one I have written novels in myself. So we have a group of "vampires" travelling throughout the west and basically leaving carnage in their wake, but some of the victims decide to fight back. I thought there were several interesting things going on, such as the vampires posing as traveling actors. I also liked how Janz tweaked his vampires a little, so they were almost a new [...]

    3. 2.5 StarsCody and Willet are both suffering through a personal loss caused by these Dust Devils that roll into town, preying on the unsuspecting townsfolk.Cody must muster up the courage needed to try and stop the monsters from destroying all that he cares for.I found the pacing of the first half to be a little slow for my tastes, but I was able to learn a lot about Cody and Willet's background. Some moments in this story were a bit unbelievable and over-done, specifically when the vampires were [...]

    4. This book was scary!!! But it was also AWESOME!!! The best vampire novel I’ve read since Dracula and ’Salem’s Lot! Jonathan Janz is on hell of a writer. With the exception of 13 Bullets, The Strain and30 Days of Night, it’s a little hard to find good vampire fiction these days (Thank you Stephenie Meyer…you fucking bitch!).Dust Devils, however, was a refreshing and very enjoyable read. This book is a western. Yes! A western with vampires in it! Something I always wanted to see. Well, a [...]

    5. Arguably, there's nothing more American in print and film than the Western. It's iconic. The same can be said for that ages-old king of monsters in the horror genre: the vampire. No, I'm not referring to the teen heartthrob bloodsucker that sparkles in sunlight (no disrespect to that author) or the melancholic Euro-vamp who pines for his humanity whilst draining some hapless harlot (again, no disrespect to that author, either). But the nasty, relentless killing machine that shows no mercy in its [...]

    6. Yippy ky yay! Now that’s what I’m talking about, a good old fashioned western (vampire western) complete with saloons, watering holes and a massive gun fight. I’ve been looking for a book like this for a while now.Dust Devils is a dark story about Cody Wilson and his need for revenge. His problem is that the targets of his vengeance are not mere mortals, but a traveling coven of vampires. What I enjoyed most about Cody’s character is how real he was. He is not a fearsome gunslinger who c [...]

    7. Having just finished Exorcist Road by Jonathan janz I was expecting big things from Dust Devils and unfortunately the book did not live up to expectations. The problem I find with many vampire books there is too much action and not enough concentration on the story or development of character. So we seem to spend endless scenes wading through tedious fight sequences as the main players set about destroying themselves in acts of depravity and gore!! Our hero Cody Wilson wants revenge for the murd [...]

    8. Dust Devils is a blood drenched tale that takes a different and refreshing spin on the vampire genre. These blood suckers don't sparkle or make angst-filled boyfriends. They are mean and nasty and are coming for your wife. At least this is what Cody Wilson finds out when the undead come to his town disguised as a traveling theatre group. They cast his star-struck wife as part of the show and don't give her back. While pursuing the actors, he teams up with 12-year old Willlet Black, who has lost [...]

    9. This review is courtesy of topoftheheapreviewsThe heartbreaking story of Cody Wilson will have you on the edge of your seat. It’s a story about courage, it’s a story about revenge, and ultimately redemption. It’s also a story about vampires. But wait; vampires you say? Don’t they sparkle? Don’t they lust after high school boys and girls 150 years younger than themselves? Not in this story! Jonathan Janz creates vampires they way they were meant to be! They are horrific creatures that wa [...]

    10. Jonathan Janz is as reliable a horror writer as any former member of the Leisure Book Horror Club could ask for. A batch of strong characters, a fun page turning tale, and some bad ass vampires propel this great story along. There were a few spots I felt were either ridiculous or overdone, but next to the majority of this story, I would easily recommend it to my fellow former members of the LBHC.Nice work, Janz.

    11. Man, oh man, Dust Devils has restored my faith in vampires. Add the twist with it being set in the old west and you have the finest horror novel of 2014! This one is a barn burner - Janz at his wildest and best. The dialogue is crisp and authentic, the action intense, the terror palpable. Dust Devils is one that can't be missed.

    12. Non-stop ActionJans writes at a ludicrous pace. The violence never ceases, the dread never abates. Dust Devils is a weird western done right. This book laughs in the face of modern vampire novels where the creatures are love interests and heroes. The ferocity of the vampires reminded me of Bill Paxton in Near Dark.Well done.

    13. Just when I thought vampires were no longer scary, Samhain Publishing and author Jonathan Janz decide to prove me wrong! That’s right…you heard me. Janz’s latest novel, DUST DEVILS, reignites the terror-fueled horror sub-genre that for many decades held readers and movie-goers in the grip of fear. Thanks to TWILIGHT and other titles that turned undead bloodsuckers into wimps, I thought this was a dying subject matter (no pun intended). But authors like Janz are here to show us that vampire [...]

    14. Jonathan Janz has a way with words (sometimes requiring me to grab a dictionary), but that's okay! His story, Dust Devils, set in New Mexico in the 1880s, chronicles the journey of Cody, a vengeful young man whose wife is slaughtered by a troupe of vampires masquerading as actors. Thank God Janz subscribes to the notion that vampires are evil creatures that torment and murder without remorse. Teenage girls looking for forlorn, pasty-skinned vampires who've never had a pimple and who attend high [...]

    15. OH MY GOODNESS where do I start? I LOVED this book. It was horrifying, dark, full of evil vampires who like carnage for no other reason than murder! The story was fast paced and never once did I think oh just get on with it. More than once I wanted to put the book down because I was grossed out but never did =)

    16. If your looking for some fast paced, violent, balls to the walls action, look no further! Buy this book. Jonathan's style is similar to the late Richard Laymon. As a big Laymon I love finding a book that gave me the same enjoyment as Laymon's did. I had a blast with this!

    17. I grew up watching westerns with my Papaw and Janz does a great job of capturing that wild west feel! I really appreciated that this was a different sort of vampire story and set in a different time than most. The vampires that Janz created were nothing to scoff at and possibly some of the most vicious vampires I've read about. Killing them was no easy feat, and they left nothing but a trail of bodies and blood in their wake. I actually think it was a stroke of brilliance to have vampires in the [...]

    18. It's on from page one, and it doesn't stop until it's done. On a desert in 1880s New Mexico, a man called Cody and a boy named Willet spy a group of vampires feasting on some nice human barbecue. The vampires, travelling from town to town as a theatre troupe, have taken Cody's wife; from Willet, they've taken his whole family. We get the backstory bit by bit, but otherwise it's nonstop action, told on the go; after a fight with the vampires, Cody and Willet try to head off the creatures at a near [...]

    19. I love mixed genres. Hard boiled science fiction, fantasy mystery etc. But my favorite mix is the horror western, and Dust Devils is a great example why. Jonathan Janz has written a horrific tale of terror in the old west. The human characters are sympathetic; at least the ones that are meant to be. There are plenty of nasty humans too; the kind that you want to see get what's coming to them. The monsters are, well, monstrous. Completely evil and not afraid to show it, the monsters here revel in [...]

    20. Vampires, when done right, are among my favorite monsters. Some excellent examples of vampires done right are I AM LEGEND, by Richard Matheson, SALEM'S LOT, by Stephen King, and THE STRAIN, by Guillermo del Toro. The vampires in these books are bloodthirsty, vicious killers and the thing that makes them good examples--in addition to fine writing--is that these vampires terrify. Another excellent example of vampires done right is DUST DEVILS, by Jonathan Janz.DUST DEVILS is atypical of the vampir [...]

    21. The book “Dust Devils” by Jonathan Janz was a astonishing book. It wasn’t a book where I had to force myself to get through, it was surely a good read. I completely never asked myself why I was reading this book? It was clear from the start that I was reading because of the quality, nothing short of spectacular. I did ask a couple questions regarding to the characters of “Why did you do this?” or “Why did you do that?” because it didn’t seem to be so clear to me as it might’ve [...]

    22. Dust Devils kicks off with a truly remarkable and spellbinding kind of mix between "From Dusk to Dawn" and "True Grit". We are immediately dropped into a maelstrom of violence, depravity and horrors and only gradually we find out what happened and who did what to whom leading up to the current situation. Janz writes really good, the prose is fluent and driven, and part one of the book is a solid 5-star read.Unfortunately I felt that the other 2 parts, the mid one especially, dwindled into "moder [...]

    23. I love weird westerns, and I wish there were more out there like this one. Janz is a great writer. His characters are sympathetic and his action scenes are tight and exciting. The prolonged action scenes in the first half of the novel pay tribute and stand proudly next to those of Joe Lansdale in his Jebidiah Mercer series. If I had one complaint it would be that the story might have been stronger if it had been tied up by the end of part two. It felt to me like it reached its climax here. It br [...]

    24. I was recently privileged to read Dust Devils by Jonathan Janz in advance of its publication in 4th February 2014.Dust Devils is a tense and riveting tale which reaches a ferocious and breathtaking crescendo where all hell breaks loose. Janz’s vampires are thankfully not the simpering lovelorn creatures we have seen plague horror literature of late; instead they are relentlessly vicious and monstrously carnal. As with Janz’s other novels this fantastic story is grounded by wonderfully drawn [...]

    25. A vampire novel set in the wild west. This novel is about a man, Cody, who witnesses vampires doing unspeakable things first to his wife then to the family of a young boy, Willet, that he meets. They are determined to wipe out the swarm of bloodsuckers, but they've got their work cut out for them. I enjoyed "The Nightmare Girl," one of the author's other novels and I was curious to see what he would do with a historical horror novel. It's an interesting, fast-paced read that will keep you turnin [...]

    26. I like the action of Jonathan Janz books. They may be a challenge for many folks that can't handle a lot of gory stuff but if you can you will probably enjoy his books. In this novel Cory and Willet (a young lad he meets in his travels) end up having a lot in common and unfortunately for them, the things they have in common are all dead people killed and mutilated by a group of 'vampires'. The book has a lot of action, well developed characters who are out to get them. The only real issue I take [...]

    27. My first read of Jonathan Janz. I tried this book after hearing it being recommended by Brian Keene on his horror podcast. I can see why people like this guys work!I really enjoyed this story. It's a vampire tale, but with a twist. A good way to describe it guess would be "The Lost Boys" meets "The Young Guns".The story itself is great, it sucked me straight away. It obviously held me for the duration as well because I constantly found myself getting annoyed with the characters and their actions [...]

    28. Dust Devils is gruesome marriage of a gritty western and visceral horror while carrying on an affair with Gothic erotica. The atmosphere is dreaded with a sense of foreboding that is truly unique to Mr. Janz's style. He superbly crafts his (human) characters to be real, normal, and overall relatable. Like the majority of us, they are thrown into horrific circumstances with their lingering problems still plaguing them. The pacing is taut and the suspense is relentless, like a roller coaster in pi [...]
