    1. As with Allegory of Love, some of the essays were lost on me due to not having read all of the literature Lewis discusses. But others, particularly those on education, were well worth the read. From essay IV, Our English Syllabus: "You see at once that education is essentially for freemen and vocational training for slaves."

I tracked down this book in pursuit of "the Idea of an 'English School'" (56-77) for disciplinarity development of English"the fact is that those who have no experience in the teaching of English are living in a fool's paradize as regards the ability of the average undergraduate toconstruehis mother tongue" (61).
