    1. I received a review copy of this book but the poor formatting in said copy (apparently a second edition!) was annoying and offputting. That's not the only reason I have no intention of finishing it. The writing was sophomoric (but some potential there if a strong editorial hand was supporting it) and I frankly am just kinda done with male authors who think opening with a young girl (or woman) getting raped is the makings of good lit. Maybe it's based on history, but when I'm thrust into the stor [...]

    2. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest reviewI have absolutely zero complaints about this book. The author has a great voice, made rich, three dimensional characters that I mourned, wrote a compelling story and did a fantastic job as a man writing a strong but flawed, female character. This is an epic story, told from Mary's perspective, and the rich writing and storytelling reminded me of Diane Gabaldron's Outlander books, the way we're immersed in history, seamlessly blending [...]

    3. The Butcher’s Daughter is a charming, thrilling novel that has made me fall in love with historical fiction all over again. This incredible novel enchanted me both with its beautiful, descriptive literature as well as the incredible characters we encounter along the way. The Butchers Daughter is a read that will keep you engrossed enthralled and enchanted until the very last page. This book was so phenomenal and addictive that I found it unputdownable…in other words I was impatient as I move [...]

    4. The Butcher's Daughter is based on a true story, the life of an Irish pirate queen in the Elizabethan era. The story is told in the first person from Mary's point of view, which gives a unique perspective on a pirate's life. Mary has her own set of rules that the crew must follow also, but she is not adverse to spilling blood when necessary. Much of the tale is Mary telling her story to Queen Elizabeth while imprisoned in the Tower with Sir William Cecil taking notes in the background. There are [...]

    5. I enjoyed this tale but found it a bit too long, particularly the first part of the story. It was developed nicely and there was generally a good flow but did drag a bit in a couple of places. Worth the read if you love seafaring stories with a difference. My version of the e-book did have some minor grammatical (mostly word choice) errors, not sure if that was the fault of the author, editor or of the person who put it into the e- version but it did not interfere too much with my overall enjoym [...]

    6. At the age of twelve, Mary witnesses her father’s murder and is then raped by the perpetrators, whom she kills. Thus begins the tale “Lady” Mary weaves to Queen Elizabeth while imprisoned in the Tower of London on charges of piracy. Young Mary spends the next few years under the tutelage of a smuggler, where she becomes adept at this trade and falls in love with ships and the sea. A bequest gains her sufficient funds to purchase her own vessel, and she becomes a successful smuggler in her [...]

    7. Book Review originally published here: iheartreading/book-touI must admit that I know little of ships or life at sea, so I’m not sure how accurate this is described in The Butcher’s Daughter, but it does sound pretty realistic. In any case, this is an entertaining read that offers a strong plot and remarkable characters.Mary, our main character, is captain of her very own ship, prowling the Caribbean, prospering in the New World. But when the past catches up with her, and Queen Elizabeth deci [...]

    8. What a strong female character, Mary is strong fierce yet very fair to others. She hates a liar, murderer and anyone that has hurt others for fun or money.Mary is a ship captain, she is a pirate that has a couple of ships and she & her men go out and survive the only way they know how, look after each other.Mary has grown into a strong woman and I know that her father would have been proud, she was able to avenge her father's death and move forward with her life with the help of some great m [...]

    9. This book has received a Discovering Diamonds Review: 'a gritty tale not for the faint of heart. It takes place in the years before, during, and after the sailing of the Spanish Armada. McMillan pulls no punches here, and in spite of the violent world in which Mary lives, she possesses a moral compass that draws readers in and never releases them. The story ebbs and flows like the tide with high periods of tension and peaceful interludes where readers can regain their breath. 'Helen Hollickfound [...]

    10. I received this book for free in return for an honest review. This was an interesting book to read. It had a strong female character as the heroine.I loved the idea of a female pirate. There is betrayal, revenge, fighting, and romance all present. I was a bit confused as to the ending. I guess you can make your own conclusions as to what exactly happened. I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys historical or pirate stories.

    11. While the book was great, there were some things that were left unclear; espically towards the end. I didn't like the end, I felt she should have lived on with her 'Hunter' and her crew retired. Overall it was a good read, just needed something extra.
