    5. It’s only 140 pages, and it’s a fun read! This book offers a concise introduction to the main ideas and issues in science of paleontology. Throughout the book, I found some interesting historical facts that I didn’t know as a paleontology major! But beware- don’t expect any technical information in this book about fossil collection, interpretation or identification. The beginning chapters set the historical scene over time, and explore the cultural fascination with fossils. Next, the aut [...]

    11. This vibrant and informative guide to fossils takes a broader approach to the subject than you might expect, but is all the better for it. From evolution to dinosaurs, chemical processes to fossil artists, Thomson's obvious enthusiasm and expertise helps to make this much more than just a technical guide to palaeontology. We get a glimpse into what fossils were once thought to represent, and an analysis of their impact on philosophy and in popular culture. There is the obligatory 'What is a foss [...]

    12. As usual for the Very Short Introduction series, here is a book that really gets to grips with the bones of a topic (pun not originally intended, but I’ll leave it in!) Written in a relaxed, conversational tone, the author’s enthusiasm for, and knowledge of palaeontology nevertheless comes across, as the subject of fossils is given a thorough treatment. Arguably the most “popular” varieties of fossil are those that once existed inside a dinosaur, pterosaur or marine reptile, or those tha [...]

    17. An introductory exploration of what fossils are and their significance. Made me want to buy some fossils - so I guess that's an endorsement.
