    1. I have been hearing good things about Hugo Pratt, yet I was still surprised by how much I enjoyed the adventures of his hero, Corto Maltese, in this first album, set in the early years on World War I among the exotic islands of the South Pacific. I have come across a quote by Bill Bryson in a travel book I finished only a couple of weeks ago that seems appropriate her: Bill visits the Maritime Museum in Liverpool, and laments the passing of the age of sail and discovery. "Once there was infinite [...]

    2. One of the greatest graphic novels ever by the Italian Hugo Pratt, The Ballad on the Salt Sea is a beautiful black and white inked comic with the swashbuckling dark and handsome mercenary sailor Corto Maltese with his alter-ego Rasputin. The art and text are both Pratt's. I saw an expo here in Paris where they filled an entire room of the handwritten proofs for the book - total nerdgasm. This is probably my favorite Corto tale, but use it as a gateway into his mysterious but amazing world. An ab [...]

    3. I read this because Hugo Pratt and his Corto Maltese were and continue to be hugely famous in Europe, and are almost unknown here, not much has been available. So it's classic comics history. And this is a substantial graphic novel, surprisingly long for the kind of tale it is. Corto Maltese is a privateer/pirate in this 1967 introduction to him, set in 1914 in the Pacific, and involves swashbuckling type adventure characters such as a guy named Rasputin, Monk, shipwrecks, kidnapping… its an a [...]

Let [...]

    10. Corto Maltese is the eponymous character of a series of adventure stories by the late Italian comic book master, Hugo Pratt. Translated into English from French in a few scattered volumes here and there throughout the decades, it seems that the legendary Mr. Pratt’s most famous creation is finally getting the treatment he deserves with what should hopefully be a series of high quality English graphic novels collecting all of Maltese’s adventures. This book, ‘The Ballad of the Salt Sea’, [...]

    11. I had read a lot of european comics before I bought this, but this was the first graphic novel. I was captivated from the start. One out of four books I consider as essential for the person I have become. The other three are George Orwell's "Homage to Catalunia", John Fowles' "The Magus" and Michael Dibdin's "Cabal".

    12. re-scaled & re-structured translation version (not the new IDW one) hurts the work and shows how important page and format is in comics

    16. I received "Corto Maltese" as a gift from a comic loving Italian. After listening to him talk about the Corto comics for months, naturally I was itching to get my hands on one. According to him Corto is a bit of a "cult comic"-an Italian classic, beloved by many, not only for the amazing characters and adventures, but also for Hugo Pratt's stunning artwork. Boy, do Italians know their stuff! I was pleasantly surprised when I was presented with "Corto Maltese: The Ballad of the Salt Sea", and man [...]

Sjajna priča i prije svega humoristični prijevod nekih fraza me doveo do suza! Još jednom, oduševljena!

    20. Corto Maltese is among the few classics of 20th century European comics to still get a lot of attention to this day. I think the enigma of Maltese himself and the fantastic draft work of Pratt is responsible. To me the adventure was very long and rambling - similar to a Tintin story, but without the frenetic energy. I didn't really get into the story very much, to be honest. I would like to read another Corto Maltese book before coming back to this one.

    21. Hugo Pratt’s work is gorgeous! When I lived in France, I was too poor to buy copies of his bande dessinée so I collected postcards of his work to decorate my walls. This is the first Corto Maltese story that I have read. Rating the book on looks alone, I’d give it four stars. However, the story lost me a bit and would warrant a two (I know, scandal!). Corto Maltese is a not entirely trustworthy, but fairly likeable pirate whose Ballad of the Salt Sea finds him in the islands north of Austra [...]

    22. Hugo Pratt, is like Lorenzo da Ponte, the Mozart librettist a Jew of the Venetian ghetto. In "fables of Venise" , he pays homage to the hidden courtyard where is learned Hebrew and 22 alphabet letters tells you an history.I read all his books, but I choose this one because it's the first one. I was young when I read it and I was perplexed. It was not usual to read black and white pitcures. Obviously he was influenced by the comics American and especially Milton Caniff.I saw the original boards at [...]

    23. Loved the graphics, but the story wasn't really my thing. Too much war and backstabbing. Charming in its own way, but found it a bit of a slog to get through. Glad I read this classic of the genre anyway.

    24. 2 kitabını okudum corto maltese'in ama sevemedim.

    25. This story is the first outing for the Corto Maltese series, which follows the adventures of a dashing mercenary in various exotic locations in the early 20th century. For anyone who is not familiar with it, the series is a classic and should be read by anyone with an interest in comics. This first story is a long (160 pages) adventure set in the Pacific Ocean around the start of World War I. Corto and his associate Raspoutine are working for the mysterious Monk, stealing coal from haulage ships [...]

    27. Klasik devete umetnosti! U ovoj odista dobro zamišljenoj i realizovanoj baladi u slikama [...]
